Purpose Driven Focus
The sole purpose of this website is to make sure all teens (and adults) have access to learning to read and write at an age-appropriate level. My purpose isn't to convince them go to college or into any specific career field. In fact, I hope they carve out something special for their lives. I hope they blaze a trail in a direction that gives them peace, as well as prosperity. The world isn't what it used to be a decade ago. There are more and different opportunities for the young adults coming into their own, than in the past decade or two. Opportunities come to those who know HOW and WHERE to knock.
In addition to this, it's important to support teens who have been behind for years not just in reading, but in the content background they have missed out on because they were struggling to read the words.
According the Gallup and the Department of Education
Roughly 54% of Americans aged 16-74 years old are reading at or below the 6th grade level. What does that mean? Let's consider this, outside of an illness or injury affecting the brain, Americans post-high school didn't forget how to read and write. If you're 47 and reading at a 6th grade level, it's highly likely you graduated high school at that level. This isn't the fault of graduating students, this is a fault of the education system for many reasons too numerous to recount here. Check my blog posts.
Here's what we know, for a FACT: increased literacy rates will likely lead to increased income. It's not about "if" someone went to college or not, it's about overall literacy health. The better a person reads and writes at their age appropriate level, the more opportunities they will have. It's that simple. Between 1998 and 2021, our nation as a whole didn't make much progress in literacy. Factor in the pandemic years of 2020 to 2022 and you see an overall decline in literacy rates that were already stagnant. You can check the National Report Card and see the numbers for yourself. It's time to change all this, one lesson at a time.
My goal is to reach as many teens and adults as possible and help them become the best readers they can be.

Background Focused Literacy Development
Building Background Knowledge is essential for students to achieve maximum comprehension of a text. For that reason, using videos and alternative texts ABOUT a time period, culture, or event will help build a foundation of general knowledge to assist in comprehension of a required text.
